An Amazing Maid- A Lady Who Taught Me Life With A Cup of Tea!

Housing.com Life lessons. Optimism in Life Real Heroes of India
It happened just last week and I must say I have never felt more proud and optimistic ever before.

I was getting ready for my office when my cook came. She started doing dishes and was making preparations for breakfast.

I asked her for a cup of Tea and started reading the newspaper. After few minutes she emerged with the tea, handed it to me and kept standing there. I was engrossed in my daily dose of news but as few minutes passed I was inclined to look up.

She: Bhaiya Ek baat puchni thi. (I want to ask something)
Me: Haan batao. (Yes, tell me)
She: Wo baccha god lene ka registration kitne ka hota hai ?( How much does it costs to register adoption of a child?)
Me: Mujhe Nahi Pata ( I don't Know)

She: Mere bagal mein jo padosi hai unke judwa ladki hui hai aur wo ek ko anathalaya mein dene ki bole rae they. Main soch rahi thi main he god le lun wahan to pata nahi kaise rakhte honge.
( My neighbour recently had twin daughters and they are planning to leave one in orphanage. I wish to adopt her as I am not sure how they will treat her in orphanage.)

Expressions on her face were that of real worry. In further conversation I found that the family from whom she would be adopting the daughter is a practicing Hindu family (My maid is a Muslim).

Her words were: In sab se kuch nahi hota hai bhaiya, Kalma padhwa lungi, eid pe kurbani de dungi bus ho jaega. Bacchi hi to hai!
(These things do not matter. I will get prayers recited for her, would make sacrifice on eid and that would be enough. She's is just a little child!)

So here was a women who works as a cook to feed her family and while people kill their unborn daughters in womb thinking of them as a financial burden, here she was talking about adopting another girl from another religion.

Needless to say I was more than overwhelmed with her affection and commitment. In these times when we so called educated people are fighting over region and religion, discussing rapes and secularism and asking questions about growth benefiting only a Hindu male population (That was too insane even by NDTV standards )here is a lady who has the will and gut to do just the right thing.

There were a lot of things that she taught me that day in such a small conversation. I am a struggling entrepreneur and there are many days when I can really see it all falling apart. Whenever anything fails or falls apart, I look out for reason. Sometimes it is lack of fund or lack of manpower or lack of skills or even other such reasons. Passing the buck is always the easiest thing to do and certainly not very right thing to do.

She could have also done that. She would have easily cursed and blamed her neighbors for being so empathetic, stone-hearted and just moved on. She isn’t on facebook or she could have easily written a post on her wall criticizing the patriarchal mindsets of her neighbors and would have got done with her moral responsibilities. Yet she decided to act.

Forget mess of others even how many of us really take responsibilities of all our actions and its consequences? How many of we actually take big risks in life? Not really a lot of us.

Not many of us have the will power and courage to do what she did. Almost everything we do is evaluated on various scales of viability and rationality. A lot of us today want to be an entrepreneur, want to live a dream, want to pursue an idea but not many of us do that. You know why? It is because we are too afraid to take those risks!

We do not want to do away with that monthly SMS of few thousand bucks being credited to our account. No matter that it is never enough, we know it never will be but yet it gives us stability and we are much happy with that.

We are afraid of challenges. She was not.

She knew she was adding one more mouth to feed in her family. She knew how costly the education is becoming everyday and how tough she might have to work in future to just fulfil those basic needs of the child she just adopted.

Yet she was sure of her decision! She was ready to work hard because she knew that it is a difference she wants to make. It is a dream she wants to cultivate. I know she will win and I can see how she had already won.

(It is not a work of fiction but something that really happened. Life is beautiful and  inspiring, we just need to look up in the right place!!!)
